VERBRUGGHEN ORCHESTRA.
OPENING CONCERT TO-NIGHT. It was unfortunato that owing to tho unexpected delay in the arrival of the .Maheno yesterday Mr. Yerbrugghen and his orchestra could not give their first concert last night. Messrs. J. and N. Tait now announce that tho order of tho programmes'as already advertised will be adhered to save that an extra concert will bo given on Saturday afternoon at which the programme advertised for last night will bo given, thus keoping faith with season ticket holders. The orchestra will appear in tho Town Hall this evening. The opening numbor is Goldinark's overture "Sappho." A specially fine work which will be of very great interest is Sir Edward Elgar's " Enigma," variations on an original theme; it was first introduced to tho public by Dr. Richter, at St. James' Hall," in 1899. It has two peculiarities. The first is that the theme on which the variations are built is in itself understood to be a variation of a melody not rovealed by Elgar, and the second is that the variations are admitted by the composer to have reference to the characteristics of certain of his friends. Lovers of Wagnerian music will appreciate tho remainder of the programme, for the following works of the great composer will bo submitted:—" Entranco of the Gods into Valhalla" (" The Rhinegftld "), "The Murmurs of the Forest," from " Siegried," Siegfried's journey to the Rhine in which Siegfried goes forth to seek adventures in the world, leaving Brunnhilde guarded by tho flame on the rock. Siegfried's Funeral March, which follows, is one of the finest contributions of Wagner to the realm of music. It occurs during, the last act of "The Twilight of thej Gods," and is played as Siegfreid's com-, panions sorrowfully bear away his corpse after the treacherotw murder by Hagen. The concluding number of the programme is tho famous " Ride of the Valkyries." Patrons of to-night's concert are requested to note that the box plan of reserved seats is at Coleman's (B-M. Arcade) and from to-morrow at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd., seats may be reserved for the remainder of the season.
