DISTRIBUTION OF MIX
HYGIENIC METHODS URGED.
PRESENT SYSTEM CONDEMNED.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACTION.
In the opinion of the council of the Chamber of Commerce the present method of distributing milk in Auckland i 6 insanitary and Y iot conducive to the health of the young, and at its meeting yesterday it decided to urge the District Health De partraent to initiate a scheme for the more hygienic handling of this important food.
The Hon. George Fowlds said Auckland was a long way behind cities in other parts of the world, particularly in Canada and the United States, in the matter of milk distribution. It was one of the modern sandals.
Mr. J. Boddie said the present system was 20 years behind the times. A'much more hygienic system could be adopted without any municipal schemo being attempted. (Hoar, htar.) He had seen milk cans in use which would havo been condemned by dairy factories in the country 10 yeara ago. They were "bashed" and the surface broken. It often happened that at some convenient corner of thu street milk was poured from the larger receptacles into smaller ones without lids, and while this was bad in line weather,
it was infinitely worse dtini ram, for the water dripping from Ihe i amir's oilskin coat found its way into the can before the householder's door was reached, and then, often enough, it was poured into a "billy" left in close proximity to a drain.
Mr. Fowlds said that in Toronto milk was distributed in sealed bot'.les at a lower price than now charged in Auckland. In subsequent discussion members mentioned thtir belief that far too g r 63t a quantity of preservative was placed in themilk, and that some householders were often more to blame for their milk zoinir sour on account of their receptacles ocin;; unclean. All members agreed that it would be inadvisable for the municipality to engage in the milk business, but all were emphatic that the present method of distribution was insanitary.
