THEFT AS A SERVANT.
MONEY TAKEN FROM COUNCIL SIX MONTHS' HARD LABOUR. A sentence of six months' imprisonment with hard labour was iaposed by Mr. Justice Herdman on Alfred Pearson (Mr. Dickson), aged 62, formerly clerk at the city fish market, who pleaded guilty it the Supreme Court yesterday to three charges of theft as a servant. Counsel said that accused had worked for the Auckland City Council for seven years, but owing to ill-health had stolen various sums of money to pay debts incurred. His Honor said it was always recognised that such offences by persons in positions of trust and responsibility were serious. All over New Zealand such thefts were becoming prevalent among men whotseemed to have no sense of honesty and responsibility. This was not a case of a sin?le theft, but of a series totalling over £50, and extending over some montbj. Accused had also two previous convictions to be taken into account. It was not a case for probation or reformative detention.
