WHILE THE FIRE BURNS
NO PAYMENT, NO BRIGADE.
COMktJNIST COUNCILS. Australian and. N.Z. Cable Association. (Seed. 12.30 LONDON, Sept- 17. The Rome correspondent of the Daily Chronicle states that a quaint situation developed in Milan, where there .is a Socialist City Council. A fire occurred gp Grecomilano, which is served by the Milanese fire brigade. A call was sent, but the Milan Council replied that it would not send engines as Grecomilano had not paid for the last fire services. Grecomilano telephoned to other towns, all of which replied that if Grecomilano would not pay, Milan would not pay them. Meanwhile the fire was burning merrily. Finally a town councillor in Grecomilano became security for the debt, and the Milan brigade rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire after great damage had been done. The Grecomilano Council is a Communist body and, like that of Milan, is hopeI lessly insolvent.
