MINING NEWS.

[OHINEMURI.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. The latest developments at the Obinemuri Gold and Silver Mines property -at ' Maratoto are of an .encouraging nature. On the recommendation of Mr. H. Stansfield, ex-superintendent of the Talisman mine, the Silverstream crosscut is being extended to intersect and develop the Camoola reef 200 ft. lower than the southern workings on that lode. This crosscut is now out 636 ft. from the starting point of the extension, and the Camoola reef should be met with in the very near future. In the upper levels, on the Camoola reef, where it snowed & width, of about 30ft.. encouraging values were met. with, and '*■ is stated that there is e*ary indication that these will improve at depth. . In the course of the crosscut referred/ to several ore bodies have been met with. At. 374 ft. the first, reef was intersected and roved to be 40ffe. wide. ' Values, although )w, are ' showing from wail to' wall. This appears to be the southern' continuation of the Queen reef, and on ..its present course will probably junction with the. Camoola,. It is. also considered- quite probable that by driving south or. this lode aa $86 s Shoot carrying better values may be .found. A reef 4ft. wide was/ also cut in chH» proximity to the large .'ore. body, and the assays taken -from this " average £2 2= pes ton. This reef appears to be.*'; branch 05 the Queen reef, as indications are ■ that 1* will junction with the latter. At iSiii. another reef was met with which, proved, to be-34ft, wide, and although no yeduee «* showing in the quartz broken _it is. ;! thought probable tbaf. by driving on; the..reef, values will be met with. The last ore body intersected was out at 550 ft. This shows 7 a width of about 21ft. of olefin quarts carrj-jig values at various places. Samples were sent to the Thames School of Mines, and the assay results for a', width of 13ft. 6in. from the hangingwall give a general value of close on £6 per ton. The remainder of the reef to the footwafl does not disclose values at this point. • • In view of this important development the directors of the company obtained Mr. Stansfield'a opinion, and his report ia stated to be enooui&ging. As good values have been opened up in the Camoola reef 1500 ft. south and is the Queen, Royal, and Julia reefs about 700 ft north of the crosscut, there, is considered to be a prospect of th» mine proving to be of considerable extent ana value.
