EVEREST EXPLORERS.
NO EASTERN APPROACH.
FLOWER-DECKED COUNTRY. A. *nd N.Z. LONDON, Sept. 1L Reports from the Mount Everest expedition dated Kharta, August 17, show that much interesting exploration has been done in the. eastern valleys in seeking an approach to Everest. One party climbed the summit of Lagmala, 18,000 ft. high, and also explored, a spur opposite Everest, 19,400 ft. high. They obtained a glorious panoramic view of vast cliffs, gorges, and glaciers. The expedition met with much flower-decked grassy country on the slopes. Their experiences have decided the leaders that it is impossible to ascend Mount Everest from the east, and they ! are now exploring the valleys round Makai lau and the Kharta-Tsingpo Valley, which j are clothed with most luxuriant vegeta- | tion. A feature of the district is the numi ber of lakes, whereas lakes are very rare | in the Himalayas.
