UNEMPLOYED IN AUCKLAND

MANY TRADES AFFECTED.

GENERAL labourers chiefly.

Unemployment in the city has incerased sinca 11 le beginning of this week. The men most affected are general labourers, but others engaged in different branches of industry are also experiencing a lean period. Inquiries yesterday revealed the fact that a Dumber of carpenters are out of work, while 40 grocers' assistants, 20 chemists' assistants, and 45 soft goods' assistants are seeking employment. An indication of the extent of unemployment is tbe fact that recently the Ponsonby School Committee advertised for a earstaker for the school, and among the applicants were many carpenters and other tradesmen. There are a fair number of painters, and from 10 to 12 members of the Timber Workers' Union idle, while a few hairdressers are seeking employment The secretary of the Tailoressses' Union stated yesterday that t'here were many members of the union without work, and the tailoring trade had been very slack for some time. There was, she said, no immediate prospect of the relief. A fair proportion of the members of the Auckland Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Union are numbered among the unemployed. On Wednesday the proprietor of a soda water fountain required two girl assistants, and no fewer than 55 applied. There are more unemployed in connection with this class of workers than has been the case for years. The Government Labour Bureau yesterday made arrangements to send 25 men to relief works at Mauganuku, in the Hokianga district, and several other men are to be sent to similar works in the Thames district. Fifteen men, who had not previously called at the bureau, attended yesterday, in search of employment. . ,
