DEATH OF A CHILD.
COMMENTS BY CORONER. [BT TEX.EOKAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Thursday. During the course of an urgent operation for diphtheria at the Dtmedin Hospital the death occurred of James Shaw, aged five years, -whose parents reside at Maori Hill. At the inquest the coroner said the evidence showed that at the time Dr. I/indon saw the child its condition was acute and immediate steps had to betaken to give the child a chance of life. It was unfortunate that the doctor did not see the child earlier, but that had been explained. The mother was evidently misled as to the child's condition by an earlier history of croup and did not appreciate the diphtheric condition. Once this condition was appreciated everything possible was done. The verdict would be that death was due to heart failure following diphtheria while undergoing a necessary operation, and that all proper medical skill was nsed during the operation.
