AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.
FRENCH CONSUL. WELCOMED. The Auckland Orphans' Club opened its season on Saturday evening, wben a very enjoyable entertainment was held in the clubroom in the Society 0 f Arts hall. The president of the club, Mr. W. A. Beddoe, presided, and about 400 members were present. The Governor-General. Lord Jellicoe, was to have attended, but was unable to do so on account."of indisposition. Mr. A. C. Day. official secretary to His Excellency, and Captain P. R. &I. Mundy, aide-de-camp, M. E. T. Beauregard, Consul for France, and Lieutenant R. S. Judson and Mr. J. Crichton, V.C.'s. were among the guests. .The president thanked members for the honour done him in electing him to the office for a second term. He extended a warm welcome to the visitors, and in addressing M. Beauregard paid a tribute to the part played by France in the war. M. Beauregard, in reply, said France was deeply grateful for the splendid assistance of the New Zealand soldiers in s time of great need. Short speeches were made by the Hon. A. M. Myers, M.P., and the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, who have been elected vice-presidents of the club. An excellent musical programme was given, comprising selections by the orchestra, under Mr. G. F. Cater, vocal items by Messrs. A. Ripley, H. Richards, A. McElwain, J. Ryan, G. L. Gurr, Marshall and Graham, recitations by Mr. G. Warren, and a 'cello solo by Mr. C. Little. "The accompaniments were played by Messrs. G. Shariand and Cyril Towsey
