BASIS OF CITY RATING.
AN ALTERATION DESIRED.
UNIMPROVED VALUES SYSTEM
PETITION TO THE COUNCIL.
A petition has been lodged with the City Q>unoil, in terms of the Act, praying for a poll on the question of the method of levying rates in the city area. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gtinson, stated yesterday that the petitioners desired the whole of the ratepayers to be afforded an opportunity of declaring for or against the system of rating on the unimproved values as a basis on which the rates should be levied throughout the entire city area.. The petition was now being checked by the city valuer, and if it contained the necessary number of signatures, namely, 15 per cent, of the ratepayers, it would be dealt with at once.
The Act requires the Mayor, in the event of the petition being in order, to fix a date for the poll not less than 21 days, nor more than 28 days, from the date of the receipt of the petition. Failing the Mayor taking such action the poll would be held on the 28th. day. Mr. Gunson said that as soon as the valuer's report had been received, and he expected it to-day, the matter would be oonsidenied. Everything being in order, it was possible that the poll would be held on April 27, the same day as the municipal elections.
