COOK ISLANDS' TRADE.
POST WAR RECOVERY.
The trade and revenue of the Cook Islands have continued to expand year by year since 1917, thus showing the gradual recovery of island trade from the effects of the war, stated the retiring Resident Commissioner, Mr. P. w. Platts, in an interview in Wellington! This expansion is shown by the followirg figures : Trade for 1918 (both exports and imports), £140,000—revenue, £11 000 • trade . for 1919, £182.000—revenue £14,000; trade for 1920. £270 000—re' venue. £22>000. Thus 1920 was 'easily a record ylar, in regard to both trade and revenue. The best previous year in the history of the Administration was 1913 when trade reached the value of £220 000* The present financial position of the'Adl ministration is quite satisfactory. Trade and revenue have been well maintained; and the estimated surplus of revenue over expenditure for the current year is £10,000. as against £5200 for the previous year. The year just closing has been a good one for the islands generally, and a very prosperous year for Rarotonga in particular.
