CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA.
A WIN FOR WEST END. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] BLENHEIM. Wednesday. The championship regatta was held at Picton to-day. Unfortunately a wind that sprang up from the north-east shortly after the first race had been rowed raised a nasty jobble, and prevented any championship events from being rowed until the evening.- Several times the starter had the crews in line, but he found it impossible to get the boats away. In the champion sculls, for instance, all four boats became filled with water, while before the champion fours was postponed for the second time two crews had to row to shore to empty their skiffs. At Picton itself calm conditions prevailed, which also obtained as far as the mile post, enabling all the minor events to be got off. These provided keen competition, and one or two close finishes. Results are as follows:— Junior Fours.—West End, 1; Wairau, 2; Wanganui Union, 3. Also started: Picton and Star. West End almost immediately assumed the lead, followed closely by Wairau and Wanganui Union. The order was maintained throughout. An excellent race was won by half a length. Champion Fours.—Wanganui Union, 1; Aramoho, 2; Blenheim, 3. Won ..by half a length after a great race. Champion Sculls.—St. Clair (Hamilton). 1; Sharp £ Wanganui Union), 2. The race was rowed in semi-darkness. The remainder of the championship events were postponed until to-morrow.
