OBITUARY.
MR. J. WEBLEY. An old and well -known resident of the Mount Eden district, Mr. Joseph WebIcy, died on Sunday at his residence,,. Sunnyside Road, in his 89lh year. Mr. Webley, who was a native of Corsham, Gloucestershire, came to New Zealand in 1884. Four years later he was appointed clerk and collector to the Mount Eden Bead Hoard, and when the district was formed into a borough in 1906 he becarrfe its first town clerk. In the following year his advancing age caused him to retire after 19 years' public service. He took a keen interest in public matter*,, and up to his death he was able to read \ without the aid of glasses. Mr. Webley, who was a widower, is survived by a ; ' The funeral will take place at- to-morrow. A vote of; condolence in connection with Mr. Webley's death was passed by the Mount Eden Borough Council at its meeting last evening. 1 , ; MR. T. E. SMITH. Another ilink with the early days has been severed by the death, in Auckland, at the age of 81, of Mr. Thomas' Edmund Smith, late of Kaiaua, and one of the best known settlers in the Miranda district. Mr. Smith was boru at Salisbury, England, and cama to New, 'Zealand with his father and two brothers by the ship Royal Stuart in 1864. For or five years he served with the New Zealand Armed Constabulary in the Maori War, and later commenced business in | Karangahape Road with his brothers, \ shortly afterwards going to Thames. About forty years ago he purchased a, farm of about 2000 acres on the western r shores of the Hauraki Gulf, known as New Brighton, Miranda. There he estab-> lished an accommodation licensed house, which is 3till in existence. His wife, died about eleven-years ago. His brother, \ Mr. Alfred Smith, died in September last. ■= the only surviving member of the family.: , being Mr. Henry M. Smith, of Ponsonby. - OLD ONEHDNGA SETTLER. One of the oldest settlers of Onahunga; Mr. John. Boyd, died last week ai the residence of his nephew, Mr, D. Iteeve. Beach Road, Onehunga, aged 87 vears; . Mr. Boyd, who had resided in Onehunga for 75 years, arrived in New Zealand in the ship Ramillies on August 14, 1335.
