THE SUMNER FATALITY.
STRANGE STORY -AT INQUEST. A strange story •was told at the inquest into the death of 'John Baixd, -who committed suicide at Sumner Beach, near .Christchurcbr A witness said deceased, who appeared peculiar in his manner, accosted him on the pier, and asked what depth of water was there. Witness replied that probably there was about 12ft. The man said : " I will scon see," and began to take off his coat. Witness went and informed the police, who returned with witness, but the man had v disappeared. Constable W. J. Hampton said he found on a seat a coat, vest, and hat, and a Savings Bank book bearing the name John Baird, and showing a credit of £500. There was also a ©srtiflcate issued by the Ashburton Permanent Building Society, showing that John Baird had invested £300 in the society. The body was subsequently washed up on the rocks near the baths. The verdict was that deceased, while of unsound mind, drowned himself.
