RESCUES FROM DROWNING.
■ INCIDENTS AT MATATA. Recently there have been two rescues from drowning at Matata, telegraphs our Whakatane correspondent. A young lady, Miss Ivy Burt, got out of her depth, and was soon in difficulties. Her cries for help were first treated as a joke, and she Bank twice before a rescdl was effected by other bathers. Mrs. D. Shaw, who cannot swim, was swept out of her depth, and her cries for help were heard by Freddie Burt, aged 15 years, who, fully dressed, pluckily swam to her assistance. Mrs. Shaw was unconscious when brought ashore, and it was some time before she recovered. It is the intention of the Matata residents to bring" Burt's plucky action before the notice of the Royal Humane Society.
