POLICE COURT NEWS.
DISTURBANCE IN STREET. MAN FINED TEN POUNDS. A disturbance in Symonds Street on Thursday resulted in Thomas Albert Holt and Thomas Henry Williams appearing before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.. in the Police Court on Friday, the former being charged with having been disorderly while drunk and the latter with having obstructed a constable in the execution of his* duty. It was stated that a constable found the traffic in the street completely blocked by the two men, who were fighting. He arrested Holt, v*ho was drunk. Williams told the latter not to go, and urged the crowd not to let the constable arrest Holt, the result being that the latter resisted violently. Holt waa fined £5 and Williams £10, the. magistrate remarking that he must look on a disturbance of this sort as serious, particularly in view of the' large number of visitors in town. MAN ASSAULTS HIS WIFE. A charge of having assaulted his wife was admitted by Walter Byrne. It was stated that a constable had been called to accused's house on Thursday and found the woman in a hj steiical condition and bleeding from the face. She said her husband Jiad assaulted her. Accused said both he and his wife had had a couple of drinks, and he had only given her a " slap.'' He had been before the Court on a similar charge before. The magistrate imposed a fine of £3, in default seven days' imprisonment. CASES OF DRUNKENNESS. Victor Hoyle, who was convicted of having been disorderly while drunk, and having used obscene language in Queen Street, was fined £1, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, on the first charge, and £5 in default 10 days' imprisonment, on the second. William Patrick Doherty, who was found helplessly drunk at Maungaturoto, was fined 10s and ordered to pay medical expenses, £2 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment. CHRISTMAS MORNING CASES. A brief sitting 1 of the Court was held on Christmas morning before Mr. W. Handley, J.P. Charged with drunkenness and with having wilfully damaged a glass window, valued at £4, George Coyle, was remanded till to-morrow. Carlos Tucker, who was charged with having stolen a pocket wallet containing £5 from F. J. Worker, was also remanded till to-mor-row. Three first offenders for drunkenness were convicted and ordered to pay costs.
