AUSTRALIAN-BUILT SHIPS.
ALLEGATIONS REFUTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 12.30 a..m.) SYDNEY. Nov. 18. At the inquiry into the building of Commonwealth ships which is being conducted by the Federal Public Works Committee one of the employees of a private shipbuilding firm, whose statement to the effect that he made dumps which could be used as dummies was submitted yesterday, said that they would not ' necessarily have been used' as dummies as they had a legitimate use. He did .not intend to allege fraud. The manager of the Cockatoo Dock gave evidence that hogging might be due to other causes than dummy fastenings. The secretary of the Wharf Carpenters' Union, who was employed in building ships, denied that dummies were used, stating that if he saw such a thing he. would have reported it to his union. The report of officers appointed to conduct tests whether bolts and dummies were used, was read. It stated that after examination of the ships they were satisfied* that the work . was faithfully carried out. The -commission has adjourned to Melbourne.
