GENERAL BIRDWOOD.
FAREWELL TO THE AI.F.
NEED FOR HARD WORK. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 6.
General Sir W. R. Birdwood gave a farewell address to about seventy officers and men of the Australian Imperial Forces at Australia House. He expressed the opinion that both the Graves section and the Cadre were working excellently and were not overstaffed. The clearing-up of London and the Continent was proceeding satisfactorily. The total number of Australian soldiers of all ranks now in Europe was only 144. He reiterated his gratification at the readiness of returned soldiers to settle in Australia. He believed that they would make as good citizens as soldiers. He defended short hours, but hard work during the whole of the workers' time was necessary if Australia hoped to recover her economic position.
