FURNITURE TRADE WORKERS.

ARBITRATION COURT AWARD. An award in the Auckland United Fur ? niture Trades dispute has .been -filed by the Arbitration Court. The hours of work are fixed at. 44 a week, to be worked on five or six days, as mutually agreed, upon, but this does not apply to furniture packers employed in factories. The minimum wage for journeymen cabinetmakers, upholsterers, and others is to be 2s an hour, and for picture-frame makers, -wiremattress makers, and others Is 10jd an. hour. Labourers employed in. timber stacking, furniture -packing or other unskilled work are to be paid not less than Is Id an hour. The wages of apprentices are to be : First year, 15s, second year £1 2s 6d, third year £1 IBs, fourth year, ill 17s 6d, filth year £2 lGs. For apprentices r to picture-frame makers and wire-mattress makers the wages are io be: First year ISs, second year £1 Ss, third year £1 17s 6d. The award provides that every apprentice residing -within three miles of a technical school during the first three years of his apprenticeship and until he gains a certificate shall attend classes in connection with the furniture trade or its branches, and the fees shall be refunded to the apprentice- by his master when his attendance is not legs than 70 per cent, of the maximum possible. Every appren--1 tice who has obtained a certificate that he has passed an examination equivalent to J that for a certificate in grade 2 of the j City and Guilds of London Institute, shall be paid not less than 5s a week extra in his fourth year, and 7s 6d in his fifth year. Female workers of 16 years or over employed in the weaving of wire-mattresses are to be paid : First year £1 a *week. second year £1 7s 6d, third vear £1 15s, fouth year £2 2s 6d, fifth year £2 10s. Helpers employed as assistants to machinists- and wire-mattress makers shall receive : Up to 16 years 15s % week, 16 to 17 £1 2s od, 17 to 18 £1 10s, 18 to 19 £1 17s 6d, 19 to 20 £2 ss.
