AIRMEN IN THE ALPS.
CHRISTCHDRCH TO MOUNT COOK. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Minister for Defence, mentioned that Captain Isitt and Captain Wilkes had flown in a Bristol Fighter aeroplane from Christchurch to Mount Cook and back to Timaru. Captain Wilkes, who is secretary of the Air Board, telegraphed from Timaru that they left Christchurch on Tuesday at 3.50 p.m. and arrived at Timaru at 4.45 p.m. They left Timaru at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and arrived at Mount Cook at 11.7 a.m. The maximum height attained during the flight was 14,000 ft., which is some 1600 ft. higher than Mount Cook itself. They encountered a heavy wind at this height. The return journey to Timaru occupied only 25 minutes, and the whole performance was considered satisfactory. i
