NEWTON DEFEATS' PONSONBY.

MARITIME 17, DEVONPORT 3. ' The three first-grade games' under League rules on Saturday all provided excellent contests. The match between Newton and Ponsouby on No. 1 ground at the Domain ro-an-ted in » win for Neirton by tho narrow margin of one point, after an exceptionally fast and interesting game, during , which the spectators were worked up to a pitch of great enthusiasm. City and Grafton met on No.' 2 ground at the Domain, and after a heavy scoring game, the former won by 24 points to 17. Wartime played Devonport at North Shore, and proved victorious by 17 points to 3. . The results of Saturday matches in the senior grade competition leave Maritime and City in the lead, with eight points each, as a result of four wine apiece. , Newton comes next with" seven points, having scored three wins and played a draw. Then follow Ponsonby and Marist Old Boys, with three points each. Devonport has one point to their credit as a result of a draw with Poneonby. Grafton, with four loeses, are at the bottom of the list. City and Newton have each played five games, tho other teams having each received a bye. 4
NEWTON V. .PONSONBY. Ponsonby were the first to attack, a short dash and good kick by A. McGregor taking play to the Newton line. A rush by the red and white forwards cleared the dancer, and the ball went out at half-way. Newton then began to get tb» ball from the scrum. and set up several passing- movements, but good tackling by the Ponsonby backs prevented the Newton backs becoming dangerous. A free kick to Kewton gave Dufty a shot at goal, but the ball went wide. Soon afterwards Cross, for Ponsonby, had a fruitless kick at goal from a penalty. Another attempt from an easy position saw Cross kick a, good goal. Ponsonby .Newton 0. A good forward rush by.the Newton forwards took play to the Ponsonby 25. where from a penalty Dufty placed a goal. Ponsinby 2, Newton 2. A .good combined movement by Newton ended with Bass taking the ball to the Ponsonby 25. and exciting X near the line ensued.
