GIFT TO ART GALLERY.
PAINTING OF WARSHIP.
"ARRIVAL OF THE NEW ZEALAND."
A very fine addition to the Auck'.ard . Art Gallery has just been made in the gift of Mr. Walter Wright's well-known £ picture, "The Arrival of H.M.S. New Zealand in Auckland Harbour, April 29. 1913." The picture has been secured to the city through the efforts of Mr. H. Dunlar Johnson, who was successful in obtaining • subscription* to the amount of £85, the price paid for the picture, 54 well-known Auckland citizens having subscribed to its purchase. The formal pre- * sentation of the picture, which has been '. on the loan, to the Art Gallery since the i second visit of the warship last August, $| was made yesterday to the Mayor, Mr. J- -V-j H. Ganson, by Mr. Dunbar Johnson. A || letter accompanying the .presentation, and % containing 34 signatures, was read by Mr. I? Johnson, concluding as follows :—" We «:| consider that' the, picture will have great ;| historical value in the future, as this was q the first battle-cruiser given to the Mother ?,| Country by an Overseas Dominion prior •. jj to the outbreak of the Great War, and *•> proved to be of great assistance'as a unit .•; of the Grand Fleet in. .the North Sfa, I having taken a prominent part in the .-.?• three great naval engagements— land, Dogger Bank, and Jutland." The gift was cordially acknowledged by Mr. Gunson, who accepted it on behalf of the city with sincere thanks and appre- "I, ciation as a very valuable and welcome addition to ths Auckland Art Gallery.
