HARBOUR BOARD WANTED.
MEETING AT KAWAKAWA. [by telegraph.—own- correspondent.] KAWA.KASVA. Tuesday. A public meeting was held at Kawakawa last night in reference to the formation of a harbour board. Mr. Vernon Reed, M.P., chairman, stated that the erection of freezing works, with a storage capacity of 100,000 freight carcases, would be completed at Kawakawa in eight months, and be ready for next season. Meat would be shipped from Opua, in the Bay of Islands, nine miles by rail from the works. At the Opua Wharf the minimum depth was six fathoms, with a quarter of a mile swinging room for ships. During last summer a Japanese steamer of 5000 tons had loaded timber at the Opua Wharf without difficulty, and prior to the war H.M.S. New Zealand lay off Russell in complete belter during a north-east storm. He advised the meeting to urge the County Council to undertake the functions of a harbour board, pending the creation of a board.
