THEFT ON A STEAMER.
THREE FIREMEN ARRESTED.
The theft of a valuable silver-backed hand-mirror, the property of Miss M. Fields, a passenger of the steamer Armagh, was reported to the Auckland police on the arrival of that vessel from N?w York yesterday morning. Mis s Fields, v,ho has come to New Zealand to join relatives at Featherston, missed the mirror during the voyage from Avcnmouth to New York. On the arrival of the steamer at the latter port th<; theft was reported to the police there, but their investigations into the matter were without result. The matter was yesterday placed in the hands of Detective-Sergeant R. J. Issell and Detective Gourley, of the Auckland water police. The mirror was recovered later in the day by Detective-Sergeant Issell in a pawn sho" in which it had been sold for a small sum shortly after the vessel's arrival. Later in the day three firemen on the steamer were arrested by the officers named on a charge of being concerned in the theft. They will appear in the Police Court this morning.
