MISHAP TO KARORI.
— ♦ FINDING AT INQUIRY. EFFECT OF STRONG TIDE. I EXONERATION OF MASTER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Friday. Decision was delivered to-day by Mr. H, Widdowson, S.M., chairman of the magisterial inquiry into the cause of the mishap to the collier Karori, which struck the bottom when entering Dunedin Harbour on November 18, and sank at the wharf after being berthed. The magistrate said the opinion of the Court was, that the casualty was caused by the ship taking a sheer in a strong flood tide, which threw her out of position, and, through the vessel not answering the helm in sufficient time to enable her to clear the danger. In these circumstances the Court exonerated the master, officers, and crew of the ship from all blame. The accident was in no way attributable to any defect in the ship's gear, and the master and officers acted with all prudence after the accident. The certificates of the master and officers would be returned. Captain Hopkins, master of the Karori, was allowed costs.
