Mr. C. F. Francis, district manager of the Australian Mutual Provident Society at Auckland, has retired on 12 months' leave of absence. Mr. J. G. R. Bryant, director of returned soldiers' settlement in New South Wales is visiting New Zealand. Mr. : Bryant is making a particular study of j the repatriation scheme in New Zealand. - Mr. J. Fraser, cf.ief passenger clerk in ; the Auckland railway office, has been ap--1 pointed stationmaster at Gisborne, to fill ' the vacancy occasioned by the retirement | of Mr. K. M. Boswill on superannuation. Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Duigan ' D.5.0., chief, staff officer, Auckland, has ! gone to Wellington for a few days. He ' will deliver a lecture on film training to . the candidates for staff corps appointments who are receiving a course of in- ' struction at Trentham. ! I Mr. George Allport, who has been engaged in the Public Service since January ' j 1, 1875, and has been secretary to the t Marine Department for 16 years, will retire on superannuation at the end of this j I month. He recently retired from the position of president of the Public Service j I Association. Early in the new year Mr. 1 j and Mrs. Allport" will leave for" Sydney", i j and \n March next will leave there for £! England by the Cronies, subsequently rej j turning to settle at Hutt. j I . Colonel Hugh Stewart. C.M.G., D.5.0., M.C.. a distinguished Canterbury soldier, is returning to New Zealand on "the Ruahine, which is expected to arrive at Auckland on December 20. Colonel Stewart left New Zealand as a lieutenant with the a Main Body, Canterbury He i saw service throughout the Gallipoli cami paign, and after the evacuation was given . the command of the 2nd Battalion. Stewart was promoted j to the rank of colonel, and took charge i of the educational scheme for the N.Z.E.F. 3 Colonel Stewart holds the Chair of Laa- , guages at Canterbury College.
