While landing at Omaha, Lieutenant Maynard, who is on his return journey from New York to San Francisco, broke the crankshaft. If another aircraft can be obtained within the time limit he will be allowed to continue the flight. Lieutenant Maynard arrived at Sydney, Nebraska, yesterday, after flying through a snowstorm, and left shortly after for New York. He was expected to reach Chicago to-day. His speed at times reached 100 miles an hour. Lieutenant Lowell-Smith's machine caught fire and was destroyed, but the airmen landed. Seven of the competitors have been killed as the result of accidents since the flight started. None,- of the. 50 west-bound competitors reached San Francisco, while six of the 50 starting from the west arrived in New York.
