A White Paper shows that the enemy sank 2379 British merchantmen, of a total tonnage of 7,759,090. Of these, 2099 were sunk by submarines, 259 by mines, and four by aircraft. In all, 14,287 lives were lost. The enemy also attacked, but did not sink, 1885 ships, of a total tonnage of 8,007,967, resulting in the loss of 592 lives. In addition, 675 fishing vessels, of a total tonnage of 71,765, were sunk, 534 lives being lost.
