USE OF BAD LANGUAGE. OFFENDER SENT TO GAOL. A disturbance which took place in Hargreaves Street on Thursday aiternoon, resulted in Alexander McMasters appearing before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, on charges of being found drunk and using obscene language within the hearing of passersby in Hargreaves Street. Accused pleaded not guilty. Witnesses stated that on the afternoon of Thursday the accused was intoxicated, and used filthy and obscene language towards his wife and little child, his voice being heard quite distinctly across the street. Neighbours stated that accused was in the habit of using such language. Accused was convicted and sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. Accused : Can't I have a fine ? The Magistrate : •No ! You are a beast to have U3ed such language to your wife and child. If you come here again you will get a term of some months. "ONE OF THE PROBLEMS." Samuel Walker, alias Williams, alias Jones, alias Morgan, aged 56, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge that he was found by night on the premises of the Prison Gate Home, Epsom, on Thursday, having previously been convicted of being a rogue and a vagabond. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann said this old man was one of the " problems." He had made himself so objectionable that th«i authorities at the Salvation Army Home would not have him. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. James Wilson Mackay, aged 29 (Mr. Singer), on a charge of assaulting John Hadfield, on October 13, so as to cause him actual bodily harm, was remanded until Tuesday next. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann asked that bail be not allowed. He said that the assaulted man was in a delicate state of health, and counsel agreed that there were reasons why bail would not be advisable. The magistrate adopted this course. Jas. Edgar Steere, aged 48, for a third offence of drunkenness was fined £2 in default 14 days' imprisonment. A first, offender was convicted and discharged, while a female offender who did not appear, was fined 10s.
