FERRY-BOAT DISASTER.
TEN PERSONS DROWNED. Ten persons, all belonging to the Birmingham district, were drowned in the River Severn, at Hampstall, near cstourport, recently. A ferry boat, heavily laden with passengers, was crossing, when it capsized in midstream and 15 persons were thrown into deep water. Hampstall is a quiet spot about three miles below Stourport. The ferry was about to put off, when a steamer was observed coming tip the river, and the ferry waited while the steamer passed, it had got some distance across when another steamer appeared coming down the river, and just alter it had passed one of the men aboard the ferry fell into the water. He was dragged out and safely placed on the ferry boat again, when presumably, as the result of the commotion attendant upon the rescue, the wash of the steamers got into the ferry, whjch overturned. Witnesses of the accident pushed off in another boat, but only five of the ferry's occupants were saved. The second steamer was out of reach by this time, but crowded with passengers as it was, with the river very shallow at the point, thus precluding its turning, any attempt at rescue by it would have involved risk of a further calamity.
