STATE AID FOR FARMERS. SEED TO BE SAFEGUARDED. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 16. In view of the anticipated failure to a large extent of the present wheat crop, and the possibility of the yield being insufficient to supply seed for next season, the Government has been urged by the Assembly to take steps to secure all the present year's crop for seed purposes to prevent private firms purchasing and retailing to farmers at exorbitant prices. The reply was given that the Minister for Lands was acting in that direction. Mr. W. G. Ashlord, who is: acting «st ' Minister for Agriculture in the place of Mr. W. C. Grahame, has arranged a comprehensive scheme for the assistance of farmers affected by drought. Provision is made for tiding necessitous farmers over the period of adversity, and in view of this the. Government is appealing to storekeepers and machinery firms to refrain from harassing farmer clients. It is also proposed to establish representative local boards in each shire to ascertain the needs of the farmers and to distribute necessary assistance in the Assembly.
