THE VICTORY LOAN.
FORTNIGHT'S EXTENSION,
STATEMENT BY MINISTER.
" CLAIMS THOROUGHLY PRESSED." [BY TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL REPORTER.]
WELLINGTON, Thursday.
A statement with reference to the present situation in regard to the Victorv War Loan was asked from the Minister for Finance in the House of Representatives to-night by Sir Joseph Ward, Leader of the Opposition. He said that perhaps something more might be. done to press the claims of the loan than was being done.
Sir James Allen replied that the information requested was not available. The time in which the loan might be subscribed had been extended for a fortnight. This loan had been more thoroughly ad vertised than usual. Circulars containing all information likely to be useful had been sent to all public bodies, and the claims of the loan had been thoroughly pressed.
All information regarding the compulsory clauses had been thoroughly disseminated. INVESTMENTS IN AUCKLAND. BELOW EXPECTATIONS. The investments in the loan in Auckland yesterday appear to have reached a substantial figure, although the total amount subscribed is stated to be very disappointing. The banks report that the day was a very busy one, owing principally to the fact that many clients postponed making their investments until th last moment. The general experience of the banks seems to be that the total contributions are considerably less than in previous loans, one bank stating that the amount subscribed through it is " extremely unsatisfactory.
The brokers report that while business in the loan was certainly more brisk yesterday, no very large sums were involved. More subscriptions were received yester day at the chief post office than on any day since the opening of the loan. The officials state, however, that the total amount invested is very much below expectations.
