TRAINING FOR THE SEA.
NEED FOR ENCOURAGEMENT. IMPERIAL REQUIREMENT. The necessity for encouraging the voung men of the Dominion to take up the sea as a profession -was emphasised by I >rd Jelhcoe yesterday in his speech at Devonport As an instance of the value of this encouragement he quoted the case of the late Lieutenant-Commander Sanders, \.C., whom he described as "a brave ana gallant sailor, who had shown that spirit which had ever been characteristic of the seamen of the British *Jnpire. So long as they could find officers and men to man the navy, and the mercantile marine, so long would the X?H of he Empire last, and no tonwr. It was necessary for this island Dominion to produce sailors. It was im possible to depend upon the MoC Country to find all the sa il ors needed to defend the Emp.re. Therefore, it %Z essential that encouragement should be Riven to the bovs-particularlv in a sea port such as Auckland-to follow the S."
