CRISIS IN ITALY.

EFFECT OF FIUME COUP.

KING CALLS GRAND COUNCIL. MINISTRY MAY FALL. By Telegraph— Association— Copyright Times - ROME. Sept. 23. The difficulty in regard to the situation at 'Fiume is critical. The Government is tottering, and the King has convened a Grand Council of Presidents of the Chambers, exPremiers, leaders of parties, and army and navy commanders. Such a convocation is unprecedented. The offer of the Premiership to Signor Tittoni is suggested in an endeavour to conciliate Mr. Wilson. Meanwhile d'Annunzio has made enlarged claims, declaring that Italy must have the port and railways, in addition to the city of Fiume. " Even King Emanuel," he says, "would not be allowed past my sentries unless he presented himself as King of Fiume."

Milan newspapers condemn d'Annunzio's grotesque manifestoes to the Venetians of Lombardy, in which he says that if half the people of Italy were like those of Fiume Italy would be mistress of half the world. The Corriere della Sera says that Italy needs to be mistress of her own army. Preaching mutiny is very dangerous. The army may to-day answer to a Nationalist appeal and to-morrow to Bolshevist incitement.

The Secolo denounces d'Annunzio's coup as the fruit of delirious vanity.
