The Polish leader, Czarpla, I conducting propaganda from Posen, : J endeavoured to foment strikes. Arms l were poured across the frontier, and j j the disorders culminated in the Poles attacking Tichan and overI powering the German troops. They seized a battery of guns and killed I 13 men, who were garrisoning the I neighbouring military posts. Polish I bands poured into German territory ' and occupied several villages. I j Finally a serious outbreak at [ J Glciwitz necessitated martial law. j i " The bitterest fighting I have seen,'' j said Horning, "followed. All sorts' I of weapons, except heavy guns, were ' i used against the Government. Men j were taken by pressgangs from ' their homes. Thousands of people fled across the frontier."
