HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER

NEEDS OF TE AWAMUTU. REQUIREMENTS ESTIMATED. [by TELEGRAPH. —OWN correspondent.] TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday. Good progress is being made in connection with the constitution of an electric power district at Te Awamutu. At a meeting last night Mr. Toogood, the engineer, reported having conferred with the chief electrical engineer at Wellington and tentatively arranged with him for the allocation of the necessary power from Horahora. Mr. Toogood showed the area which could be economically reticulated, and which he recommended for adoption as an inner area.

It contains the borough of Te Awamutu, townships of KihikihL Ohaupo, and Pirongia, part of the Pukekura Road District, Waipa and Waitomo Counties, and three road districts in the northern end of West Taupo County. Commenting on this area, the engineer states that the power which is likely to be made available by the Government will be reasonably sufficient. By the time the district hag sufficiently developed to require more power it is almost certain that an additional supply will be available from Horahora. The power available at present will not allow the inclusion of Otorohanga in the inner area, but it is believed that the night load and the power for the butter factory there could be arranged out of the amount likely to be allotted to the board. Otorohanga will come within the outer area under the jurisdiction of this board. The committee has adopted the recommendations of the engineer, and on this basis is completing the petitions for the constitution of the power district and the definition of the inner area.
