LIQUOR FOR YOUTHS.
SALES AT TWO HOTELS.
PENALTIES IN ALL CASES.
LICENSEES AND BARMEN.
The sale of liquor to four youths below the age of 21 led to Frederick Meyrick, licensee of the Newmarket Hotel, and Walter Sames, barman (Mr. McVeagh), being charged m the Police Court yesterday.
i Sub-Inspector Wohlmann said that the hotel had a very good record, and the prosecutions were brought as a warning to other hotelkeepers. Counsel pleaded guilty, but submitted in mitigation of the barman's offence that the youths were served when the bar was crowded. The licensee had a fine record and had made the barman conversant with the law. The magistrate said the circumstances justified a nominal penalty. Committed deliberately the offence was a very grave one. Samcs was fined £1 with costs, and Meyrick was convicted and ordered to pay the costs.
Richard Philpot, licensee of the Captain Cook Hotel, and Arthur McGarry. barman, were charged with having supplied liquor to three young men, apparently under age, on the same date. The facts were similar to those in the preceding case. Mr. Rogerson, for the defendants, asked for small penalties accordingly. The magistrate ordered the licensee to pay the costs, and fined the barman £2 with costs.
