SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY.

REQUEST FROM ELLERSLIE.
The City Council met last evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, pre- ' siding. There were also present Mrs. E. ' H. Maguire, Miss E. Melville, Messrs. P. M. Mackay, J. Burton, W. J. Holdsworth, T. Bloodworth, G. Rtildon, P. J. Nerheny, J. B. Paterson, J. Trevithick, J. i A. Wamook, G. Davis, H. N. BagnalL A. Hall Skelton, and M. J. Savage. " ' The supply of electric current for Re- . muera Road is expected to be available > in about nine or ten months, according i to a report by the city electrical engineer. The report stated that the materials for the extension were now on order. ■» The extension of the electricity .supply to the Ellerslie district, which was applied for by the Ellerslie Town Board, wat recommended by the electrical engineer, on the same conditions as had been offered to Mount Roskill and Onetree Hill districts. The application was referred to the Public Services Committee with power to act. UPPER SYMONDS STREET NEEDS. | LIGHTING AND WATERING. The necessity for additional street lights in Symonds Street between East Street and Khyber Pass Road, owing to the great amount of traffic in the locality, was urged in a letter from the Symonds Street Progressive Business Association. It was also requested that the road and footpaths be swept in the early morning, and that the top portion of the street be sanded more regularly in wet weather as a precaution against accident. The acting-city engineer reported that the request for additional lights had been noted for consideration when future allocations were being made, that the road is swept'every night, and that to sweep the footpaths each morning would involve an additional annual expenditure of £100. It was the practice to sand Symonds Street on wet and foggy mornings and also during the day. The Works Committee recommended that the request regarding the sweeping of the footpaths be granted, and that a reply be sent to the association in reference to the other requests in terms of the engineer's report. The recommendation was adopted. MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. | A communication was received from the I Drainage ' Board stating that the four pumping stations which are being provided for the low level areas and reclaimed I lands on the foreshore are nearing com- j pletion, and requesting that the reticulation system in these areas be connected up as soon as possible, as until this is done the stations cannot be used. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. The petition from a number of florists against the issue of licenses to flower-; sellers in the streets, presented at th« last meeting, was the subject of a report by the Finance and Legal Committee, which recommended that the stand for the flower stall in Wyndham Street be moved back as far as possible from the Queen Street alignment, but ihat no further action be taken in regard to the petition. The city by-laws relating to the charges payable at the municipal abattoirs were amended, slight alterations being made to the fees payable
