THEFT COMMITTED BY YOUTH. *

SENTENCE WHEN CALLED UPON.

The young man, John Arthur Williams, alias Rush, who pleaded guilty on Monday last to the theft of a gladstone bag and contents, from Joha Wylie, and a returned soldier's badge and wound stripe, worth 16s 6d, the property of William Appleby, came up for sentence before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann stated that accused had previously been in trouble, and was sent to Weraroa Training Farm. He had behaved himself for some yews. When arrested he stated that he had been celebrating his 20th birthday, and was intoxicated when he took the good? Recently accused had been working at Rotorua, but reports from that district were not all favourable to him. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and was ordered to pay costs

THEFT AT ROTORUA. j I Rontere Toki, a young half-caste, pleaded j guilty to stealing seven table-knives from Hinemoa House, Rotorua, where he had been working. The police stated that accused was an industrious lad, but had been led away by another young man. He had. disfigured the knives by scratching j his initial on the handles, and they could not be returned. Accused wad convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon, and ordered to pay the cost of the knives, £2 12s 6d, within 14 days. LANDING FROM MOVING FERRY. A young man, (J. Whitlock, pleaded guilty to landing from the ferry steamer Albatross while the vessel was in motion. Mr. Durham, who appeared for the Harbour Board, pressed for a penalty, saying that the by-law dealing with this offence was being ignored by passengers, and the defendant had been repeatedly warned. Whitlock was fined £2 and costs. DRUNKENNESS. Donald Mathieson, a second offender, was convicted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, on a charge of drunkenness. A first offender, who did not appear, was fined 10s. and another was convicted and discharged.
