AUCKLAND PISH SUPPLY
UP TO SEASONAL AVERAGE,.
LINE FISHERMEN IDLE.
DUE TO BOISTEROUS WEATHER.
The 6upply of fish coming to hand in Auckland is just about equal to the average of previous years at this season, though the recent boisterous weather has militated against a steady supply being maintained. Both the municipal trawlers and those of Sanford, Limited, have been working as well as the weather has permitted, but the line fishermen have not been able to do much for some time.
Mr. J. H. Deighton, manager of the municipal fish market, stated yesterday that whitebait were oarticulary plentiful just pow, and had decreased in price about 50 per cent, as compared with the prices received earlier in the season. The = upDly of deep-eea fish was being maintained fairly well by the trawlers, and within the next month or six weeks the " school season" would be on, and large catches should be made.
Though the line fishermen were at present unable to do but very little work owing to the unsettled state of the weather, said Mr. Deighton, they were getting a better price than they had ever previously received for their catches, and he considered this improvement would be permanent. The steady supplies obtained by the trawlers had created a continuous demand for fish, and all that came to the markets could readily be disposed of. _ He added that fair supplies were coming to hand from Kaipara, and additional supplies would be received directly the weather became more settled.
