FATALITY OFF PONUI.
RETURNED SOLDIER'S DEATH.
RESULT OF FALL INTO SEA.
A fatality occurred off Ponui Island yesterday afternoon, a returned soldier, Mr. J. Howard, aged 37, losing his life. His wife lives at Strafford Street, Parnell.
The Auckland Shingle Company's launch. Emily, on which the deceased was engaged, grounded on a sand-spit off Ponui Island. With a boat-hook he endeavoured to push the launch clear, but the hook, broke, and Mr. Howard fell overboard, being quickly carried into deep water. His companion, on the launch, Mr. William Clark, threw him a lifebelt,- which h<» caught. Mr. Clark went ashore and got a, dinghy, with which he rescued Mr. Howard, who did not then appear to be in difficulties. Immediately he got on board the launch, however, he collapsed, and died, despite efforts to resuscitate him.
The body will be brought to Auckland this morning, and an inquest opened.
