SHORTAGE OF BUTTER.
POSITION JIN CHRISTCHURCH.
LOCAL STOCKS EXHAUSTED.
GROCERS UNABLE TO SUPPLY. [BY TELEGRAPH. . CORRESPONDENT.] CSKISTCHTJRCH, Thursday. It was announced last week that the shortage of butter probably would be met by fresh supplies to-day, but this morning city grocers again absolutely refused to give even half-pounds to customers. Some of the factories have arranged to get short supplies from the North Island. There are evidently not sufficient stocks to meet the needs of the city. A lady customer who was somewhat indignant this morning because a grocer would not give her half a pound was told that even the hospitals had been refused.
The manager of a large dairy factory stated that the position might become worse this week. North Island supplies should con» in about the middle of next week and lull supplies and normal conditions almost certainly would be experienced the following week.
