BURGLARY IN NEWTON.

TWO SUSPECTS • ARRESTED. YOUTHS : WIT/H BEVOLVEES. ESCAPE THROUGH WINDOW. Two arrests of armed youths—one on Saturday night and the other early yesterday morning made by the Newton police in connection with an attempted burglary ait the premises of Messrs. Eendells, Ltd., Karangahape Road. Early last week marks found at the back of Messrs. Eendells'. premises indicated" that an attempt had been made to force an entry. The police were informed, and a close watch kept on the locality.

About ten o'clock on • Saturday night Constables Castles' and Burn, of the | Newton police, .paid a surprise visit to i the rear of Rendeils' shop, and "discovered a youth near the back door. His replies to questions not being eatisfactory, he was searched, and was found to be in possession of an automatic revolver, an eledtric flashlight, and rubber gloves of a type that might be used to prevent the recording of finger-prints. While the constables were engaged in their search a whistle was heard from inside the building. Senior-Sergeant Lanigan, Detective D'Norville, and other members of the Newton force, who were in the vicinity, surrounded the building, and later, in company with Mr. Rendefi, who had been sent for, entered and searched the shop. It was eventually discovered that the person in the building had escaped through an upper window, and had got away by climbing along the roof of an adjoining building. The police having satisfied themselves of the identity of the escapee, arrested him near his home, about three o'clock yesterday morning. He, too, was found to be armed with a revolver, and also had in his possession a flashlight and a burglar's jemmy. Both the arrested youths are between 16 and 17 years of age.
