CHAOS IN WARSAW.
, RULE OF DOOR PORTERS.
! TENANTS FINED IF OUT LATE.
! A message from Warsaw states that the ■ waiters and door porters in that town, who j are among the few that have steady work i and good pay, have gone on strike, and I house servants are expected to follow. i House servants now consent to work only
, if the mistress does her share of the house|ho!d labours, especially dish washing and ; similar services. Waiters demand 15 per ] cent, of the profits of the hotels and restan : iante, while the cooks are asking 25 per ' cent. ! Door porter* demand a ten-hour day. • with the front doors closed at nine o'clock 'at night. Tenants have no keys to front I doors of apartment houses, and they are obliged to stay 'indoors owing to fear of being compelled to pass the night in the I streets. Door porters, however, express I willingness for tenants to go out after nine o'clock and come in late if they pay a 1 fine for each time they thus trouble the i door porter. _ | Most evening engagements of apartment ' ' dwellers are being given up, and the ; streets are virtually deserted at night. ; The workers in Lodz and other Polish I cities, reports state, have adopted the habit I when they feel the need of money of demanding it from the employers if they see them in the street or in surrounding i houses, and imprisoning them until they I j give what is asked. !
