GIRLS' SUICIDE COMPACT.

I DROWN THEMSELVES TOGETHER. :

"Hullo! Hullo! Hullo! This is to ; announce that the honourable ladies, Miss . Holloway and Miss Brown, have almost j arrived at their destination. . . . Cheer | up, Katie, you will soon be dead. With i best love to the brainy girls,—Daisy!" [ This letter was addressed to a woman j book-keeper at the factory where she was • employed by Daisy Winifred Holloway, ; aged 16, who with Ada Mary Brown, aged j 18, was found drowned in a cooling-pond I adjoining the corporation electric light works at Southampton. The girl's wrists were tied together by a scarf. At the inquest Holloway's mother said that her daughter left home, saying that . she was going to the pictures, and that she failed to return. The next morning she received a latter from the girl stating that she was " Oh, so tired of life," signed " Your broken hearted daughter, Daisy." There was a postscript as follows:— " I am not alone in doing this thing. I don't think I should have the courage alone, but Ada is going with me. Mother, don't think I am mad. I am perfectly sane, but too tired to wish to live. Life is such a mockery." The factory bookkeeper said that Holloway was'a high-spirited girl, full of life, but' Brown had been moody ever since an attack of influenza. They told the witness that they were going away, and asked them to write to her, but Brown replied: " There will be no pens and ink where we 3Te going." A verdict of " suicide whilst of unsound t mind," was returned.
