PRIESTS AND MARRIAGE.
DISCUSSION IN NAPLES. LONDON. April 1. The Rome correspondent of The Times saye that one section of the Priests' Conference at Naples vigorously advocated permission to marry, buit the feeling of the meeting was unfavourable to the proposal. A telegram from Rome states that about 350 priests at Naples voted for a resolution in favour of th* abolition of celibacy. A representative of the Evening Standard interviewed Father Bernard Vaugban, who eaid that he doabtoJ the report. He said that he was unaware of any tendency of tho priesthood against celibacy. A certain section of the laity were not against married clergy.
The celibacy of the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church is ft disciplinary and not a doctrinal rule. It lies entirely in the hands of the Pope. Celibacy is enjoined in order that the priesthood shall have but one interest for which to work. It has been considered by the beads of the Church that a married priesthood would not be so single-hearted in its work.
