A prominent medical man, who claims to speak on behalf of a substantial section of the city practitioners, declares that masks and inoculation are useless against influenza. Isolation is the only safeguard. MELBOURNE. April 17.

Mr. W. A. Watt, Acting-Federal Planner, in a message, says that the States are not complying with the Commonwealth quarantine regulations. He threatens to divert tonnage to the route offering more continuous employment until the State Governments concerned are prepared to withdraw their quarantine regulations. Food shops anc chemists' shops are exempt from the order closing the shops for the week-end.
