SUICIDE FOR LOVE.

ACTRESS AND PROFESSOR. A sensation was created in many circles of Tokio recently when it became known that Sumako, who had been regarded as Japan's greatest actress, had committed suicide on the last day of the New Year holidays. The day and hour of her death marked exactly two months from the death of Professor Shimamura of Waseda University, who had given up all—his wife, children, friends, and his chair in the university— love of the brilliant actress. Sumako had appeared as usual the night before at the Yurakura Theatre. It is said that she hanged herself with a scarlet silk sash at five o'clock in the morning. The Yurakuza was closed the rest of the month in memory of its leading lady. Sumako had played Ophelia at the Imperial Theatre, tut is said to have achieved her greatest success in the leading feminine role of Tolstoy's "Resurrection." She was comparatively veil off, and was a favourite with theatre-goers.
