CRICKET.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Eclen proved much too good for the considerably weakened University team, gaining a three-Mint win. The finish caused great excitement, Bridgoman, tins last Varsity man, laving to play one over hi order to stave off the three-point win. But with one minute to co the last man was bowled, and Eden gained the win.

Gillespie and L. Taylor continued Eden's first innings, and put on about 60 nine* before they were separated. Taylor played excellent cricket for his 51. He scored freely all round the wicket, getting in particularly some nice late cute. He was still goine well when Fawcett clean bowled him with a tricky leg break.

Gillespie played more cautiously, but showed a good defence and some nice scoring strokes.

R. Blair made his 44 in good style. He. seemed a little uncomfortable at first, but soon settled down, and scored freely off tbet bowling. Ho made some nice leg ehots and' strong off drives. Whelan played a forceful innings, getting in some good leg hits. The Varsity bowling was an improvement) on that of the first day, Jones bowled soma good balls, but, oeemed to tire toward the close of the innings. Fawcett got in eoraa tricky ones. Varsity commenced their second innings,, and needed 182 to keep off the three-pointer.* Cross was bowled in the first over, but gradually the score mounted up. Ganlton did not seem comfortable to any of the bowling, but managed to stay, and got in one or two nice off drives. Wylie had not got going when he wan bowled by R. Taylor. Jones undoubtedly played the best innings of the day. He went for tho bowling from tho start, and scored rapidly all through.) He got most of his runs by hard and had bad luck in being run out. Cot played a forceful innings -or his 30, He treated all tho bowlers alike, scoring) freely from all. His strokes were rather uppish, and ho was twice badly missed in the) field. Bellhouse made his 38 by hard hitting orr the leg, getting seven boundaries on the leg* side.

McLeod was the only other batsman to make any stand against the bowling. Ho played very steadily for his 13, and showed' a good defence.

The Eden bowling was not of a very higil standard. R. Taylor howled the mot* troublesome ball, while Brooke-Smith ran through the tail, getting three for 9. In the Giafion-Shoro match, the former made their 219 in the second innings by careful play. Nixon was top scorer, making! his 53 slowly, but surely. Townshend, however, proved too good a bowler for him; North Shore did not do very muc'.i, Rankin l 53. being the top scorer. Ponsonby beat Parnell on the first inntngs r results. The following is the position of the* teams:—.
