SUBURBAN TRAIN SERVICE.
.NO CONCESSIONS AT PRESENT
[bt TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday
The Hon. W. H. Hemes, in reply to Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., regarding suburban train services, states that practically no fit men have yet returned from the war to their occupations with the Department, and.very.few were discharged from camp. ( With the limited staff it becomes increasingly difficult to carry on the business on week days, therefore he cannot reasonably ask the staff to work on Sunday trains. To inaugurate any concession in the.shape of week-end tickets would, by concentrating traffic, increase the difficulties of the Department, and might prejudicially affect the handling of shipping and other important perishable goods traffic. Further, the granting of weekend tickets would inevitably bring about the reinstatement of other concession fares which are at present inoperative. He regrets that the request cannot be complied with at the present time.
